Vikings Notch Historical Victory With 19-8 Win over Methodist

Box Score

ROME, Ga. - Berry broke open a tied game with 12 consecutive goals en route to the first regular season victory in the school's women's lacrosse history, a 19-8 win over Methodist University at Ford Field Tuesday.

Despite never trailing in the game, Berry wasn't able to break away from the Monarchs until the late stages of the first half.  The Vikings opened a 7-5 lead when Jenny Miller scored with 10:21 to go in the opening half, but two straight Methodist goals evened the score at the 5:23 mark.

It was then that the floodgates opened and Berry began what would become a dominating final 35 minutes.

The Vikings scored three times in the final five minutes of the half, including a goal from Blair Shupenko with just two seconds remaining.

Nine more Berry goals would score in the second half, including three from Kristan Dziurzynski and a pair from Shupenko.

Berry would finally surrender a goal with 18 seconds remaining in the game, ending a stretch of more than 35 consecutive shutout minutes.

Dziurzynski and Brittany Coughlan led Berry with four goals apiece.  Shupenko, Anya Dziurzynski and  Jenny Miller scored three times each for the Vikings, and Katie O'Brien and Kristen Brooks also recorded a goal apiece.

Berry goalie Taylor Martin recorded six saves in notching her first collegiate win.

Jasmin Stephens led Methodist with five goals.  Emily Forester made eight saves.

Berry is scheduled to return to action March 13 at Randolph College in Lynchburg, Va.
