Freshman Chanlir Segarra scored on a driving layup that just beat the clock as Berry defeated Birmingham-Southern in overtime, 65-63 Tuesday at the Cage Center.
Trailing by as many as 12 points in the first half, Berry rallied to take the lead late in the second half. But the visiting Panthers fought back, and took a lead of their own deep in the game.
Berry's Brittany Coughlan knotted the game at 63-63 with four seconds remaining in regulation. A last-second shot by the visiting team clanked out as the buzzer sounded, forcing the game into overtime.
In the extra period, the teams battled, with the Lady Vikings holding the lead for the majority of the five minutes. But the Panthers would not back down, tying the game at 74-74 after two Alex Adams free throws, setting up the dramatic finish.
Following a Berry timeout, Segarra, who scored a team high 24 points, drove to the basket and tacked on the game-winning layup, setting off a wild celebration.
Coughlan led the Lady Vikings on the strength of a double-double performance, tallying 17 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out. Alexa Evans joined Coughlan and Segarra in double figures with 10 points for Berry.
Adams recorded a double-double for the Panthers, finishing with a game-high 26 points and 10 boards.
As a team Berry outshot Birmingham-Southern 42.2 percent to 35.3 percent.
The Lady Vikings will return to action on Nov. 26 at 2 p.m., when they face LaGrange College in the Oglethorpe Thanksgiving Classic.
