Box Score Kim Fischer Scores Late Goal; Berry Unable to Convert In Final Minute
Berry's Kim Fischer scored a late goal, but the Lady Vikings' comeback attempt ran out of time as Maryville defeated Berry 2-1 in a women's soccer match in Maryville, Tenn., Wednesday evening.
Fischer's goal came with just under two minutes remaining in the match and gave Berry (5-2-1) hope in its attempt to run its unbeaten streak to seven straight matches.
Following Fischer's score, which came on an assist from Leah Hatheway, the Lady Vikings would again move the ball onto Maryville's defensive side of the field, twice getting off corner kicks in the final 30 seconds. But Berry was unable to convert, and dropped a match for the first time since it's season opener against UC Santa Cruz on a neutral field in Clinton, Miss., on Sept. 3.
Maryville (8-2-2) received goals from Ashley Howarth, who scored off an assist from Lauren Ward in the 24th minute, and Alex Wingo, who pushed the ball into the net in the 62nd minute.
With her assist on Fischer's goal, Hatheway continued a point scoring streak that has reached seven consecutive matches.
Berry outshot Maryville 11-8 in the contest, and held a 7-3 shot advantage in the final 45 minutes. But Fischer's goal-scoring strike was the Lady Vikings' first shot on goal during the match.
Lady Vikings goalkeeper Brooke Clement recorded three saves. Michelle Foulke of Maryville had two.
Berry is scheduled to return to action Monday at Colby-Sawyer.
