Valhalla, Williams Field, Clark Track and Dickey Field

In Norse mythology, Valhalla refers to the Great Hall of Viking warriors, a fitting home for Berry’s Vikings. For students and alumni who have spent many a day eating lunch in what is today Krannert Center’s food court, the name represents a gathering place in the heart of Berry’s campus. Steve Cage – the 1974 Berry College graduate and current trustee whose $2.5 million gift kicked off fundraising for the new stadium – found inspiration in the name.

Completed in 2015, Valhalla Stadium accommodates 2,500 fans in the grandstands and features a full concessions area just inside the front gate. Since its inception, Valhalla Stadium serves as home to standing-room-only crowds nearly every football game and also brings thousands of athletes and fans each spring for Berry's track and field and lacrosse events. The eight-lane synthetic running surface, Clark Track, and associated throws venue, Dickey Field, make Valhalla one of the top venues in NCAA Division III.

Valhalla’s playing surface is named for Bob Williams, a 1962 high school graduate of the Mount Berry School for Boys, and his wife, Kay. They have been loyal supporters of Berry and its athletics program for many years. Recent gifts include funds for Berry’s baccalaureate nursing program, three new scholarships and $500,000 for the stadium project.

The throws venue, Dickey Field, was named in honor of Berry's first full-time athletic director, Garland M. Dickey, who helped lead the rebirth of intercollegiate athletics at Berry in the years after World War II. Clark Track is named in honor of Berry Board of Trustees member, Bert Clark (82C) who assumed a leadership role in fundraising for the eight-lane track circling Valhalla’s playing field by committing $325,000 in matching funds (all now claimed) to encourage additional gifts.

Valhalla, Williams Field, Clark Track and Dickey Field were made possible through the outpouring of generosity of many donors, friends and Berry alumni.
