Softball Sweeps Covenant 5-4 and 8-0, Improves to 10-0

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Improving to a perfect 10-0 on the season, the No. 5 Berry College softball team swept Covenant College 5-4 and 8-0 on Wednesday night to continue their program record start.


  • The Vikings scored all five of their runs in the first two innings, holding a 5-2 lead going into the bottom of the sixth.
  • Covenant then scored twice on back-to-back wild pitches to cut the lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning.
  • A strikeout followed by a pop out ended the Scots' late comeback.
  • In the outing, Berry added 10 hits to Covenant's nine.
  • The Vikings also committed only one error to the Scots' three.
  • Whitney Gribble (2-0) earned the win on the mound for Berry in the contest. She tossed five innings, allowing eight hits and four earned runs, while striking out one.
  • Kassie Howard earned the save, tossing the final two innings for Berry.


  • Scoring four and three runs, respectively, in the first two innings, the Vikings also jumped out to a quick lead in game two against the Scots.
  • Berry then tacked on an eighth run in the top of the fourth inning before ensuring the run-rule victory.
  • Three Vikings added home runs in the contest: Sarah Moore, Elisabeth Federici and Kylie Aiken.
  • Berry also added 11 hits to Covenant's four, while neither team committed an error.
  • Makenzie Flynt earned her first win of the season on the mound in the outing, tossing the final four innings in the win. Flynt allowed only three hits, while striking out two and adding three walks.

  • Erika Mast: 2-for-7, R
  • Shannon Schmitt: 2-for-7
  • Casey Grover: 2-for-5, BB
  • Kat Andrews: 2-for-4, BB


  • The Vikings currently have 14 different top-five rankings within the conference.
  • The nigthcap run-rule is the sixth run-rule of the season for Berry
  • Berry continued its program-record start to the year, now sitting at 10-0


Berry will open Southern Athletic Association play this weekend in a three-game series against the Colonels of Centre College. Game one of Saturday's doubleheader starts at 12:00pm.
