Swimmers Open Season With Victories Over King College at The Cage
Berry Swimmers Combine to Break Four Pool Records Saturday
ROME, Ga. - Berry College swimmers combined to shatter four pool records as both the men's and women's teams rolled to victories over King College in the first event of the 2011-12 season Saturday at the Cage Center.
Berry's women defeated King 109-69, while the Vikings men won 104-74.
Two of the pool records were broken by Rachel Sandoval, who dominated the short distance freestyle events. Sandoval set the pool record in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 25.24 seconds. Less than an hour later, she came back to set the new pool mark in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 55.30 seconds.
The men's records in the same events in which Sandoval broke pool records on the women's side also fell Saturday. Graydon McCrite swam the 50 yard freestyle in 22.25 seconds to set the record in that event, while Connor Monaghan, swimming in his first collegiate meet, set the new record in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 48.85 seconds.
Along with Sandoval's two record-breaking performances, Berry's women's teams also received victories from Kayla Sanner and Sarah Larson, as well as its 400 yard freestyle relay team.
Sanner won the 1,000 yard freestyle with a time of 12:49.27, while Larson won the 200 yard individual medley in 2:28.07.
Berry's women's 400 yard freestyle relay squad of Julie Zimmerman, Mariah Moon, Sarah Larson and Rachel Sandoval combined to finish the event with a time of 3:58.83.
The Vikings' men's team claimed seven of the 11 races. McCrite also won the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 55.24 seconds, while David Lutomski won a pair of races and Alan Campbell and the 400 yard freestyle relay team also won events.
Lutomski won the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:52.48 seconds and the 500 yard freestyle with a mark of 5:13.92. Campbell won the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.37, and the team of McCrite, Adam Jarrell, Lutomski and Monaghan combined to win the 400 yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:24.65.
Berry is scheduled to return to action Oct. 29, when its hosts LaGrange at 1 p.m.
