Baseball Earns 4-3 Walk-Off Win Over Rhodes

ROME, Ga. – Spence Johns scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning, as the Berry College baseball team earned a 4-3 victory over Rhodes College on Saturday afternoon.

The win was the 21st of the year for Berry, as the Vikings improved to 21-10 on the season. Rhodes fell to 21-11 and 12-4, and both teams will now battle it out for the league lead in a doubleheader matchup tomorrow as both teams are tied at first.

Tyler Calvert opened up scoring for Berry on the day, singling through the right side to bring home both Casey Whitaker and Spence Johns and give the Vikings a 2-0 in the fourth. Whitaker then added an RBI single of his own in the bottom of the fifth inning, knocking in Zack Walch and expanding the lead to 3-0.

The Lynx answered, adding three runs of their own in the top of the sixth inning, following a squeeze, an RBI single and an RBI double to tie the game at 3-3. Johns then scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning, ensuring the 4-3 victory for Berry.

Ben Coker (7-1) earned the win on the mound for the Vikings, tossing all nine innings, while allowing just four hits and two earned runs, striking out nine Lynx. Nick Bosma (1-2) took the loss on the hill for Rhodes, tossing the final 0.1 innings for Berry, allowing one hit and one run.

Johns led all batters at the plate in the contest, finishing the night 4-for-5 with two runs. Whitaker and Dylan Beasley each added three and two hits, respectively. Berry finished the afternoon with 13 hits and three errors, while Rhodes finished the matchup with four hits and just one error.
