JACKSON, Miss. — The Berry College baseball team improved to 13-5 overall on the year and 5-2 in Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play on Friday afternoon, besting the Millsaps Majors 8-3.
Ben Coker improved to 5-1 on the mound, tossing 7.0 innings, allowing four hits, fanning six and allowing just one earned run.
Berry struck first in the top of the first inning as Quinn Smith hit a two-run single to left field, giving the Vikings an early 2-0 advantage. Evan Romeo added a sacrifice fly in the second to extend the lead to 3-0.
A wild pitch and an RBI single from Jacob Delk pushed the lead to 5-0 by the end of the fifth, but the Majors would finally crack the scoreboard in the sixth off an RBI ground out from Brennan Ducote.
The Vikings plated three more in the seventh off a Spence Johns single, a Quinn Smith sacrifice fly and a wild pitch. Despite a pair of runs crossing for Millsaps in the seventh and eight innings, Berry held on for their fifth SAA victory of the season.
