Hot Bats Lead Baseball to 11-3 Win Over Centre

DANVILLE, Ky. – Scoring four runs in the top of both the first and second innings, the Berry College baseball team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, besting Centre College 11-3 in a Southern Athletic Association matchup on Friday night.

Jacob Delk, Quinn Smith, Tyler Calvert and Dylan Beasley each added RBI singles in the top of the first inning to give Berry an early 4-0 lead. Two additional RBI singles, as well as two sacrifice flies by the Vikings, brought home four more runs in the top of the second inning as well, pushing Berry’s led to 8-0.

Evan Romeo then added a two-run homer of his own in the top of the third inning for Berry, expanding the lead to 10-0 before the Colonels crossed the plate. Centre then plated two runs of their own in the bottom of the third though, cutting the lead to 10-2. The Colonels tacked on their final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Tyler Calvert added an RBI double to left field in the top of the sixth to ensure Berry’s 11-3 victory.

Ben Coker (6-1) earned the win on the mound for Berry, tossing seven innings, while allowing nine hits and two earned runs, striking out nine Colonels. Calvert led the Vikings at the plate in the contest, finishing the night 3-for-5 at the plate, with three RBIs and one run scored.

With the win, Berry improved to 18-8 overall, as well as 9-4 in the SAA, finishing the matchup with 17 hits and two errors. Centre falls to 12-12 and 4-6, finishing with 10 hits and no errors.
