MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The Berry college women played their first SAA conference match of the season on Berry's own campus courts, in celebration of "Pack The House" and came away with a 7-0 win over the Millsaps College Majors.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, Millsaps arrived with only 5 players and defaulted both their third doubles match and their sixth singles. This meant that Berry only needed to win one doubles match to secure the doubles point, and
Sara Mejia /
Carolina Hanson at first and
Paige Evans /
Maggie Cox at second both won through consistent service holds and by capitalizing on opportunities at the net.
Singles, however, began on a different note as Millsaps took early match leads in an effort to close the gap. However,
Sara Mejia at first singles would breakaway by consistently running her opponent from side to side, hardly giving her a chance to recover in a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
Carolina Hanson at third singles broke on the last game of the first set with fantastic chip returns and on-the-rise shot making, and she maintained that pressure throughout the match to win 6-4, 6-3. With Berry now having won the meet 4-0,
Paige Evans at fourth and
Charlee Eidson at fifth piled on the wins, and it was up to
Maggie Cox at second singles to win her match and sweep Millsaps 7-0. Maggie's match came to a deciding 10-point tiebreak, where Maggie showcased her full breadth of tennis skills with strong groundstrokes, dropshots, slices, and overheads in a back-and-forth tug of war that featured winners every other point. With all of Berry supporting Maggie, she narrowly prevailed 12-10 and provided the cherry on top for Berry's first SAA win this season.
We thank all the families, students, and members of the community for making this a special day, and we thank the USTA and Logan Yerbey for supporting the team with catered lunch.
Please stay tuned as Berry plays Rhodes tomorrow for senior day at noon, with an opportunity to go up 2-0 in the SAA conference.
