Vikings Drop First Game of Music City Classic

NASHVILLE, Tenn.. - The Berry College women's basketball team (6-5) opened up the Music City Classic with a tough 61-44 loss to the No. 16 Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops on Friday evening on the road.

The Battling Bishops got off to a quick start as they jumped out to a 15-6 lead midway through the first. The Vikings responded with a big three from Lauren Ellard to cut their deficit to 15-9 but the Battling Bishops would extend their advantage to 21-11 with :22 seconds to go in the quarter. Elly Callihan would then tack on a late free throw to make it 21-12 at the end of the first. The second quarter was a defensive struggle with the Vikings trying to keep up with the Battling Bishops increasing their lead to 30-17. Briaiah Lewis tried to spark a run for the Viking with a bucket but it was all Battling Bishops as they took a 36-21 lead at halftime. 

The Vikings looked to get back in the game to start the third but the Battling Bishops extended their lead to 39-21. With plenty of time left the Vikings looked for some momentum as Callihan hit a jumper to make it 39-23 but the Battling Bishops would go up 49-28 with 1:50 remaining. Ava Travis then hit a late layup as the Vikings trailed 49-30 at the end of the third. The Vikings got some much needed momentum to start the fourth with baskets from Callihan and Isabella Ramirez to make it 49-35 but the Battling Battling Bishops had all the answers as the Vikings fell 61-44.

Callihan and Lewis led the Vikings with 10 points each on 4-for-8 from the field.

The Vikings will wrap up play at the Music City Classic against No. 11 John Carroll on Saturday, December 20 at 12:00 PM.
