MARSHALL, Texas -
Morgan Frye's 14th homer of the season staked Berry to the lead in the first and the Vikings never looked back, topping Moravian 8-1 to move into the winner's bracket finale at the NCAA D-III Softball Championship.
The Vikings (43-5) now need just one win to reach the program's first-ever national championship series. The Vikings reached the winner's bracket finale last season but already had one loss. This time, the Vikings will enter as the undefeated team.
Frye's solo shot, the first by anyone from Berry at the final site, gave the Vikings a 1-0 lead and tied the Berry record for RBI in a season with 52.
"It's awesome. I'm just so glad that my teammates always have my back," said Frye. "I've never really thought that having pressure because I know that they're always supporting me."
That lead would hold as the Vikings got clutch defense all around the field and strong pitching from
Danielle Sudick.
Moravian (38-11) threatened to tie in the bottom of the fourth after a leadoff double. Instead, the next at bat saw a chopper to short that
Shelby Daniel fielded and sent to
Katie Parker at third, eliminating the lead runner and keeping the Grayhounds at bay.
Berry started to blow it open in the fifth as all nine batters in the order came to the plate. After three singles loaded the bases,
Katie White's sacrifice fly brought in Daniel to make it 2-0. A walk reloaded the bases for
Lauren Cothern, whose sacrifice fly to center brought home
Aleeya Thornton to make it 3-0.
Paige Bennett followed with a single down the line in right to plate Frye for a 4-0 advantage, then
Sydney Moroney plated
Anna Jackson with a single to left-center.
Sudick would allow the first two batters to reach in the fifth, with
Casey Holloway coming on to pitch for the rest of the game. While Moravian scored once in the fifth to make it 5-1, Berry answered back in the sixth. The Vikings put runners on first and second for White. Her grounder to short was flipped to second to try to start a double play, but the ball popped out of the second baseman's glove, allowing Frye to reach second safely and Thornton to motor home with the answer for Berry.
In the seventh, the Vikings put a cap on the game. Parker's sacrifice fly scored pinch runner
Grace Hamilton to make it 7-1, and a passed ball plated
Elly Bennett to cap the scoring.
Holloway earned her first collegiate save by pitching the final three innings of the contest, backing up Sudick's effort which saw the Peachtree City, Ga., native improve to 7-0 in the circle.
Berry will play at 12 p.m. CDT Sunday as they face a team coming out of the other side of the bracket. Berry will have to win one game while the other, yet to be decided, opponent will have to beat the Vikings twice.
