No. 17 Berry got even for the weekend against George Fox University Sunday afternoon, earning a 1-0 victory in Demorest, Ga., to avenge a loss from the day before. In the second game of the day for Berry, the Vikings fell to No. 14 Piedmont, 4-3.
Game One: Berry 1, George Fox 0
A pitcher's duel tilted the way of the Vikings Sunday with
Hannah Gore going the distance for Berry to pick up the win. In moving to 2-0 on the season, Gore struck out 10 batters and scattered three hits. The freshman also retired the last nine batters she faced in finishing the game off for BC.
The only run of the game came across in the third for the Vikings.
Katie White would double to lead off the inning, then would move to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Paige Bennett.
Aleeya Thornton would send a line drive back to the circle for the second out, but the throw back to third to try and get White would miss wildly. White would come in to score what would prove to be the only run of the game.
White had two of the four hits for Berry, with
Morgan Frye and Katie Parket adding the other two hits.
Game Two: Piedmont 4, Berry 3
Each team would match each other run-for-run, but Piedmont would get the final run of the game. After the Lions scored a run in the first, Berry answered back.
Riley Jackson would bounce a single up the middle to score
Morgan Frye to knot the score, 1-1.
Piedmont would take the lead back in the bottom of the second, but Berry battled back to tie the game in the top of the fifth.
Aleeya Thornton would score after an error allowed
Katie White to reach base safely. Again, Piedmont would take the lead back in the bottom of the inning, but the Vikings knotted the game one more time. With two out in the sixth,
Riley Jackson would double to center, plating Frye to make it 3-3.
Unfortunately, the sixth would be the last time that Berry would tie the game. Piedmont would use a wild pitch with one out in the sixth to gain the lead for the last time, 4-3. The Vikings would get the tying run on base in the seventh, but a double play would end the game.
Emily Whitehead (1-1) would take the loss for Berry with a run allowed in one inning of action.
The Vikings will be back in action Wednesday at home when Emory visits Mt. Berry. First pitch in the doubleheader is set for 3 p.m.
